The long standing motto of the now infamous Balans restaurants is one the Soho chain has stuck by themselves.
David Taylor (pictured above) and Prady Balan opened the very first Balans on Old Compton Street 30 years ago. Then just a sandwich bar Taylor admits there was never really any plan for them to progress in the restaurant industry.
There was no great strategy. The sandwich bar was packed so we opened Balans Soho Society up the road and hired our first chef who led us to being a restaurant”
High Society Eggs benedict (£12.50) and the infamous Balans Burger (£13) are now firm favourites and can be ordered at any time of day as the Old Compton street venues are open 24 hours. The joke goes that Tayor and Balans used to have a nightmare finding the keys to close on Christmas Eve as otherwise they never shut.
A new branch has recently opened on Clapham’s Common and with food this good and celebrities such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss continuing to favour the Soho hotspot, the chain will continue to grow in popularity.
